Psychiatry and Neurology physicians and over 20 local middle and high school students joined us today to explore the fields of Psychiatry & Neurology through six interactive sessions. In the morning, the students were able to discuss signs and symptoms of stroke using “BE FAST” criteria. They also learned about different mental health illnesses and enjoyed the sensory station where they used tuning forks, simulated neurological injuries, and learned about proprioception. Our lunchtime panel featured underrepresented medical students, residents, attending physicians and an MD/PhD student who shared their journey to medicine. In the afternoon, the students learned about different mental health diagnoses, viewed brain tissue under the microscope, held real human brains, viewed brain CTs and MRIs, and used reflex hammers to illicit various reflexes. Thank you to our community partners at Dimmitt Middle School who worked with us to organize this event!
